The warm weather is just about here. Get the spring cleaning done early so you can get on the golf course even sooner. Put your hands in the soil and feel the warmth of the earth. Things are going to get busy so don’t forget: Plan the work and work the plan. It will make everything that much easier.

Depending on the year, March will either remind you that spring is still around the corner, or you will have warmer weather and actually be able to get started with one or two projects you thought about earlier this year. Regardless of the weather that day, winter is almost over and it is time to make a spring season plan.

But don’t fret over that last minute snowstorm. With the longer days and warmer weather, the snow will not last long. We forget that snow actually provides some nutrients to the soil, and our gardens can certainly use what’s known as “poor-man’s fertilizer.”

Is the old folklore of the poor man’s fertilizer true? Well, snow contains nutrients — nitrogen (especially thanks to acid rain), sulphur, and others — and when snow falls on unfrozen ground, as it would in late spring, then the nutrients and moisture in melted snow penetrate the soil faster. The soil we use for gardens and lawns usually lacks enough nitrogen, so this extra boost can actually do some good for plants later in the year.
